Plating

  • Wipe off the plate (removing smudges, finger prints, drips and splatters)
  • Use fresh garnishes to add color
  • Use a plate that complements your dish
(Ex. If your dish doesn’t have a lot of color,
choose a dark plate for contrast and vice versa)
  • Before photographing foods like casseroles and pies, cut & plate one piece and place it next to the full dish.
That way you can see the deliciousness inside and out.

Lighting

  • Use a soft, even light source (natural sunlight if possible)
  • Avoid standing in front of the light source
  • Try a few different spots to see where the light best complements the dish

Photo Angle

  • Photograph the best looking part of the food
  • Make sure the photo shows size, shape and the ingredients
  • Take the photo from above the dish (medium-high angle, looking down)

  • Language is appropriate and inoffensive
